YALINGBILA
Yalingbila is the Jandai* word for 'whale'.
The proposed whale interpretive centre planned to be built on the headland at Point Lookout, North Stradbroke Island will house the bones of a whale that washed ashore and died a traumatic death in 2011. You can read more about whale washing ashore here. Display the whale bones goes against customary laws of the Quandamooka people.
We say 'Free Yalingbila' to return him to the sea, where he belongs. He does not belong in a whale centre, for all to gawk at.
*Jandai is one of the languages of the Quandamoooka people of North Stradbroke Island.
